Size Really Does Make a Difference

If at all possible you should try to use pots measuring no less than 15 and no more than 150 quart capacity. Smaller pots aren't recommended for two reasons. The first is that the roots have no room to grow.

The second reason to avoid them is that the plants dry out quicker. If you want to save yourself some time and energy watering them, the larger the pot, the better. Don't be shy about buying a larger pot than what you think you'll need. Your plant will "grow into it." In fact, many experts on container gardening offer this advice: bigger is better. You can, in fact, actually stunt the plant's growth if you place them in a pot that's too small for their roots. This is crucial is you're planning to cultivate vegetables with deep roots.

But, there are a few suggestions you may want to keep in mind when container hunting. First, you want a container with a wide opening. Avoid narrow openings if at all possible. This means you'll be able to grow more scrumptious vegetables.

While you may want to use plastic pots, you should be prepared for them to eventually deteriorate when they've been exposed to the ultraviolet light of the sun for extended periods. This is especially true if the pots are inexpensive and flimsy.
